MUSCLE TIGHTNESS - STROKE, BRAIN INJURY, DYSTONIA
Abnormal muscle tightness can occur after various neurological injuries, including stroke, traumatic brain injury, and spinal cord injury. This is commonly referred to as Spasticity. Or, this can occur in isolation such as Cervical Dystonia, a turning of the head and neck that is not under your control and can be quite painful. Do you have abnormal tightness of muscles in the arm, leg, or neck? Did this occur after your stroke or brain injury? Does this trouble you, but you are unsure the cause? Schedule an appointment to come talk with us. We offer botox treatments to reduce muscle spasm and allow for more useful function of the involved arm or leg, or to allow improved head positioning and to lessen pain. We can also help figure out the cause if you are unsure; for example, we can perform nerve studies to diagnose the true cause. We also are knowledgeable about bracing, rehabilitation, and oral medications to treat these conditions. Dr. Shaw Now Offering
Platelet Rich Plasma

- Platelets are cells in your blood stream that can be collected with a normal blood draw (similar to having blood drawn for lab work)
- Then, the blood will be. placed in a centrifuge and spun at 3800 rpm to separate the cells based upon density.
- Afterward, the platelets ad anti-inflammatory enriched plasma can be easily removed to create your own personalized regenerative remedy.
- Using an Ultrasound, the platelets and plasma (Platelet Rich Plasma) is injected precisely and accurately into the problematic area.
- Over a period of weeks to months, this biologic repair coupled with a rehabilitative process has the potential to improve pain, function, and quality of life greatly.
- Platelets are amazing cells that rush to a site of injury to assist with blood clothing.
- It turns out these cells also contain many signals and growth factors that facilitate the healing process and reduce pain.
- Chronic tissue damage gets stuck in the unhealed phase, as if after time the body forgets that a tendon needs to be fixed or arthritic destruction needs to be reversed.
- Restarting the healing cascade can remind the body of a chronic problem and result in a new tissue growth and repair of damaged structures.
- Harnessing your body’s own natural healing process avoids the risks of typical medications and injection procedures, because the therapy is your own tissue.
At present, PRP therapy is not an insurance covered procedure. However, research studies are published and ongoing that demonstrate beneficial effects, often much superior to traditional treatments for musculoskeletal disorders. Therefore, it is expected with time and as the body of evidence grows, that insurance companies will choose to cover this service
